Kaimukī High School – Arts / Entertainment Academy

Honolulu, Hawaii

This mural is the 8th project on the Kaimukī High School campus and it is painted outside of Building G for Kumu Ivy Kitamuraʻs Arts and Entertainment Academy classroom. We are proud to have completed this mural at the end of the Spring 2018 school semester with both haumāna (students) and teachers, all putting their mana (energy) in painting the mural.

The overall message that this mural depicts is transformation, growth and new life. The left side of the wall shows the ‘āina at its natural stage of its birth, and the movement of lava which then hardens into layers of stone (also known as lapāhoehoe). The first plants to grow out of lava rock after an eruption are “kupukupu” ferns. As they grow, lush new forests will follow.

This is part of the process of new growth. Just as our own journey progresses through life, learning something new or on a life quest, we go through stages of growth.

As the mural transitions to the right side, we start to enter into light shining through the clouds. We enter into a new day, a new life, and from there, we have a koa tree standing tall as a symbol of integrity and strength. Teaching us that we need to be brave, bold, and fearless through the difficult challenges of life.

A warm mahalo/thank you to Principal Wade Araki, Hālau Pāheona haumāna, Kaimukī High School Entertainment Academy haumāna, Ivy Kitamura, and Kumu Kaleo for making this mural happen. Mahalo also to our staff, Shanti V, Lori Chun and our sponsors of Housemart Ben Franklin Crafts, Glidden Paint, and Montana Cans. Mahalo to Nā Kūpuna, Nā ‘Aumākua, and Nā Ākua.
