This Mele Murals project was painted for the City and County of Honolulu, Transportation Department for a temporary wall on South King Street back in August 2015. With the process of construction, the temporary wall no longer exists. This project was a collaborative mural painting project with Pacific Buddhist Academy and Kaimukī High Schoool. The haumāna (students) applied the first layers of color and lead artist, Estria Miyashiro, layed down the finishing touches of this mural painting.

This `io (Hawaiian hawk) was a portion of the `aumākua series of animals painted for this mural. In Hawaiian folklore, the `io is considered a messenger of the akua (gods). The sacred bird teaches us to look at life from a higher perspective. The `io is considered to be the ali`i (king or highest chief) of all the Hawaiian birds.
