This Mele Murals project was completed with the haumāna (students) of the Kupa ʻĀina Summer Bridge Program and Nā Pua Noʻeau summer programs at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. The image shown was just one of eight different sections painted at the Hale Kauanoe residence hall on the UH Hilo campus. New kupu kupu kalo (baby taro) were planted right in front of this “ALOHA” mural with lettering created by Estria Miyashiro, showing a portal above the image of Mauna Kea in the lettering. Read up more about the Kupa ‘Āina Summer project from 2015 in our Murals Section.
With the current events of the state of Hawai‘i and the partners of the thirty meter telescope (TMT) planning to build atop Mauna Kea, the Estria Foundation is offering this print for the first time to support the Kū Kia“i Mauna Kea (Guardians of Mauna Kea) movement and KAHEA.Org to protect our sacred Mauna Kea.
