Due to the COVID-19 situation, we will be hosting and teaching online sessions this Summer 2020. This doesnʻt mean that there will be a halt to teaching haumāna / students and that we canʻt have fun!
We have revised our Summer Program with a new 3 week Kākaka Maoli Curriculum where students will learn about how to connect with ‘āina (the land) with Hawaiian values and virtual huaka’i. We will be using Zoom video conferencing. Our program is for students ages 9 – 12 years old (grades 4th – 7th).
In addition, if the in-shelter quarantine is lifted, our staff will facilitate the last 4th week to have mural painting sessions with social distancing, allowing only 10 students per day (two sessions of 5 students each session) to paint an outdoor mural at our home campus at Kaimukī High School. If the in-person mural activity does not occur, we will continue with our special online activities with a Ho‘ike online event during the last 4th week.
Our Mele Murals Summer “hybrid” program of online and potential in-person teaching is themed “Mālama,” which means “to take care.” Students will learn how to mālama through the visual arts and daily Hawaiian values. Each week, students will focus on one of the three Piko to develop a better understanding of how to mālama as a whole.
Tuition is $50 per week. Tuition includes all art and mural painting supplies. Scholarships for entire program are available for native Hawaiian students and/or students needing financial support.
